Taking your dog for a stroll is a great way to unwind after a long day, and it gives your dog a chance to sniff around and take in the surroundings. Dogs make great walking companions, and this method of exercise is low impact but tremendously stimulating for them. There are no rules for how long or how far you should walk your dog. Again you should be savvy about your dog before you set any goals for the time and length of your walk.
It is probably a good idea to have your dogs on a leash when walking on the street, or in parks that specify that you do so.
