Causes of Diarrhea

Diarrhea can occur for many and varied reasons.  Diarrhea can be acute (comes on quickly, but resolves quickly) or chronic (persists). 

There are a number of causes, the most common are listed:

  Dietary Indiscretion (eg.  Diet change.  Or ate something rotten)

  Parasites  (eg.  Intestinal worms, or Giardia)

Symptoms of Diarrhea

Loose/watery stool

May contain blood, or mucus.  The colour may be abnormal (eg.  Green).


Noisy tummy

Tender/painful abdomen



Poor appetite

Treatment of Diarrhea


Some cases of diarrhea will resolve when food is withheld for 12 – 24hrs or if a bland diet is offered to your dog.  Before doing this, get advice from your Vet (it’s not ok to withhold food from all dogs, especially young, old, or those with underlying medical condition).
