In fact can you even pronounce it? (shos-loh-eets-kweent-lee, imagine trying to get that out in dog park when someone asked what breed you unusual looking hairless dog was!)

Fortunately it is also known as a Mexican hairless dog in English speaking countries. The Xolo (much easier) is a hairless breed of dog, found in toy, miniature and standard sizes, and is native to Mexico. They are also the national dog of Mexico.

Archaeological evidence shows that the breed has existed in Mexico for more than 3,000 years.Indigenous peoples of Central and South America had Xolo dogs as home and hunting companions, and today they are still very popular companion dogs.

A genetic study was conducted in order to determine the origin of the Xoloitzcuintli breed. The study did not find a close genetic relationship between Xoloitzcuintli and Chinese crested dog. So, not all bald things are related… funny that.
