With New Zealand enjoying some of the worlds’ most beautiful terrain, it’s merely a matter of time before we start seeing services like Richmond Canine Adventures here.
The lucky people of Richmond, Virginia USA, have one more reason to wag their tails, thanks to a smart business that gets them out of the house and onto the trails.
During one of his hikes, avid rock climber Josh Rickey from Richmond Virginia, discovered a hunting dog chained to a tree and left for dead five years ago.
Josh took the abandoned dog home, named him Marshall and immediately worked on teaching Marshall manners and obedience, and regularly took him out hiking.
Josh didn’t realise it at the time but when his friends saw how much Marshal was enjoying the hikes, they asked if they could bring their dogs along too.
Recognizing an unfilled niche in Richmond, Josh founded Canine Adventures: a dog care service with a focus on adventurous outdoor excursions.
In August, Josh
launched his second branch in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Canine Adventures take two-hour hikes, directed towards more high-energy dogs that
need more attention.
While doggy day cares
are great for some dogs, they are not for every dog. “They don’t get the
attention they need.” Josh says
Every dog is different and Canine Adventures is dedicated to providing the best-fit
experience for each dog.
Josh and his team also do a lot of work with local adoption programs.
“I work with the ASPCA. People can go on our website and sponsor a dog to take out on a hike. It gives them a break from the shelter life. It also helps to spotlight the dog and give them the best chance of adoption.”
Canine Adventures – The Brief
Your dog wants a walk that's a little more. More fun, more exciting, more involved, more rewarding, more... adventurous!
Send your dog out on a real adventure, hiking, swimming, rock hopping, playing, and working during a long hike in a local park.
The Adventure Walk is perfect for high energy dogs who just can't get enough miles in every day. It's a great fit for nervous dogs who need to build confidence. It's excellent for social, fun-loving dogs who love spending time with other dogs. It's absolutely perfect for dogs who are still developing social skills and need focused time to work on manners in a healthy, productive environment. Just about every dog can benefit from Adventure Walks!
This is a real adventure! We generally cover 4 to 6 miles on local trails. We hike everything from the well-trodden paths where we'll meet plenty of friendly dogs and people along the way to the more obscure trails where we encounter challenging and difficult terrain.
We work with each dog to determine what type of adventure suits them best, then strive to provide this to them for each and every hike!
We pick your dog up and drop them off after the adventure. You don't even need to be at home, many of our dogs have weekly Adventure Walks while the owner is at work. It's nice to know that, even when you have to leave your pooch behind, they can get out and have a great time. Your dog will know when it's their Adventure Walk day!
