Question: Reily is food reactive and gets diarrhea when he has bones and the last episode caused blocked anal glands what can I do to prevent it happening again?

Hi Louise,

Reilly, like many dogs, just can’t handle bones and any abnormal faecal motion-either too hard or too soft-can end up with anal gland impaction. I wonder what breed Reilly is as this information would help with more specific feeding recommendations.

Feeding your dog can be a bit of a mine field as each is canine is an individual and what works for one may not necessarily work well for another. Where some breeds do well on proprietary dog foods others do better on a raw or more natural diet.

My basic advice would be stick to a good quality, grain free diet that produces two formed motions a day and consider adding 1tspn per 10kg dog of Metamucil if anal gland impaction continues to be a problem.

Your local veterinary clinic staff should be able to talk to you more about recommendations based on size and breed of dog as nutrition is part of our specialty, which is looking after your dog’s overall wellbeing and health.

Hope that helps!
