Q. My miniature dachshund is obsessed with playing ball. At night, when I need to sleep, Sophie wakes me up by either pulling the covers off of the bed, or putting the ball into my hand. If I ignore her, she starts vocalizing. If I put the ball away, she freaks out. What do I do?

Hi Mariann, that sounds super frustrating!

A dog that is ball possessed in the daytime is bad enough, yet one that wakes you at night to play ball takes it to a whole new level! Firstly, I would ensure that your wee girl is taught that ball games happen when you instigate them as opposed to the other way around. Any daytime training is going to go along way to making night time wakings a thing of the past. So, step one would be to teach her that Ball games are totally under your control, you start them, and you finish them too, if she keeps coming back for more, then you need to be instructive with her, teach her to "leave" the ball on command, and then give her something else to do, a 'go to bed' and 'stay' command would be a good example of a behavior she can engage in that is incompatible with the behavior you want to extinguish. It is really important that she starts to understand that you are not her source of entertainment and that she needs to listen to you when you ask her to do something, but, for her to understand what you are asking means she needs to have a good knowledge of some basic a commands. Some of these commands I have mentioned you teach her would be best taught at school, so I suggest enrolling in some basic training classes to help get you started.

Hope this helps!
