Hi there Sam,
when dogs jump up they have generally been encouraged at some stage to do so because they have been given pats and cuddles when they did it. To stop this behaviour the best thing you can do is to turn your back on them, avoid eye contact, fold your arms and walk away. If they continue to do so then I would suggest putting them into time out for a couple of minutes.

cheers,
Dan

Great advice! I have the same issue with my female AmStaff/Lab. She is God's friendliest dog. She is PERFECTLY obedient and in tune with me when we are alone, but let a visitor come through and she is overly excited and bombards the visitor with love. I have gotten her to stop jumping up on people, for the most part, but she wiggles all around them and wants to lick them and generally won't leave them alone. I have to call her back repeatedly and make her go sit down in her spot. But she will stay seated for only a little while. She then tries every sneak attack in the book to get back to the visitor. I will try the tactic of asking the visitor to turn his/her back and fold arms. We'll see!
